Shop Cotswolds ∙ Why supporting small businesses matters more than ever

Across the Cotswolds and surrounding counties, small independent businesses are the backbone of local communities. From artisans and makers to cafés, shops and service providers, they bring character, creativity and individuality to towns and villages, shaping the very identity of the places people love to visit and call home. Yet behind every beautifully curated stall, handcrafted product or welcoming storefront lies a reality that is often unseen.

An honest and unfiltered glimpse

This article was inspired by a recent Instagram reel by Hannah from Time To Burn Candles, which offered an honest and unfiltered glimpse into the true cost of running a small business. After hours of preparation, packing stock, pricing items and promoting the event, the day itself began before sunrise and stretched well into the afternoon, followed by yet more time spent unpacking and resetting at home. Despite all of this effort, trading in difficult conditions with low footfall resulted in total sales of just £63, leaving a final profit of £10.40 once basic costs like the stall fee, materials and tax were deducted, and that’s before even considering fuel or the value of those 11 hours of work. It is a powerful reminder that for many small businesses, what may appear as a simple purchase is in fact the end result of significant time, personal investment and genuine passion, with very little financial return despite a huge amount of effort.

Ripple effect

Supporting small businesses is about far more than a single transaction. When money is spent locally, it tends to stay within the local economy, circulating through other independent businesses, suppliers and services. This creates a ripple effect, helping to sustain jobs, encourage entrepreneurship and maintain the vibrancy of high streets and local communities. In contrast, money spent with larger, non-local corporations is far more likely to leave the area, offering far less long-term benefit to the region.

Time, energy, and creativity

Beyond the economic impact, there is also a human element that sets small businesses apart. These are individuals and families who invest their time, energy, and creativity into what they do. They show up early, stay late, work through unpredictable conditions and continue to create, often for very modest returns. Their work is personal, their stories are real, and their contribution to the community is invaluable.

Shop Local, Shop Cotswolds

Our ongoing Shop Cotswolds campaign, the initiative designed to encourage people to think more consciously about where they spend their money and to Shop Local, encourages locals and visitors to the Cotswolds to choose to support local makers, shops and businesses. When we do, even in small ways, it becomes possible to make a meaningful difference. It is not about spending more, but about spending with intention.

The person behind the business

The message from Time To Burn Candles resonated strongly: Behind every purchase is a person, a story, and a significant amount of unseen effort. Choosing to support small businesses is a way of recognising that effort, helping to sustain creativity, and ensuring that the unique character of the Cotswolds continues to thrive for years to come.
